Analysing Data is the second in the series of research methods and statistics modules, delivered at the School of Psychology at the University of Sussex in the second term of Year 1.

Building on the previous module Psychology as a Science, the module introduces the basic principles of hypothesis testing using statistical analysis. The main theoretical focus of lectures is on the linear model and understanding how we make inferences from samples to populations of interest.

On top of lectures, the module offers tutorials, skills labs, and practicals, where you will further develop your chops in the programming language R, learning how to process, summarise, visualise, and analyse your data, as well as write analytical reports.

JM
Dr Jennifer Mankin/mankind without the D/
Convenor
(she/they)

I convene the Analysing Data module, as well as Discovering Statistics in second year. Together with Milan, I will deliver lectures and lead skills labs and practicals. I also set all of the assessments!

I live outside of Brighton with my partner and our puppy, Jester. If you'd like to lose a few hours of your life, I can talk endlessly about D&D, houseplants, and whatever my current podcast addition is.

Dr Milan Valášek/VAH-laah-sheck/
Lecturer
(he/him)

I am the other lecturer on this module and, along with Jennifer, I will be with you in the skills labs and practicals.

Outside of stats and R, I am into rock climbing, cycling, languages, and coding. I also make a decent sourdough loaf and spend way too much time making online stuff like this website.

Helena Blackmore
Doctoral Tutor

I am a doctoral researcher and tutor. I research the effect of expectations on gustatory perception and post-ingestive experience- essentially, how what you think impacts the way you enjoy what you eat/drink. When I don't teach or work on my PhD I run and try to figure out whether I like running.

BD
Becca Dean
Doctoral Tutor
(she/her)

I am a doctoral researcher and tutor. I'm studying the role of negative mental images of the self in depression in young people. I like growing plants and eating plants. If I seem distracted, I might be watching some of the many cats that wander into the garden below my window.

JW
James Webb
Doctoral Tutor
(he/him)

I am a doctoral researcher and tutor. My research interests are focused on understanding the mechanisms involved in speech perception. I like DIY, rock climbing, coasteering and cycling.
